The SPE offers many benefits to student members including opportunities to network with professionals from industry, use technical resources, and apply for funding.

Student Membership - Chevron can cover the cost of membership dues as the corporate sponsor for SPE student dues program

SPE e-mentoring Program - become involved in a program provides students and young professionals with the opportunity to connect with a SPE member. It is a distance mentoring program that allows participants to communicate across different time zones. 

Student Chapter Events – attend social and technical events hosted by student chapters.

SPE YP Calgary Events – attend social and technical events at discounted registration prices.

Competency Matrices – can be used to identify competency levels required at various stages during career development.

The Way Ahead – an SPE publication for young professionals in the oil and gas industry. Since 2005, three issues per year have been published on a variety of subjects relevant to young professionals and students.

SPE Online Communities - the home of discussion boards, blogs, and webinar material where members can discuss technical and professional development topics.

Student Paper Contest – participate in regional student paper contests for the opportunity to advance to the International Student Paper Contest, held during the Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE).


Scholarship Program– numerous scholarships are available for students through the SPE Calgary Section as well as SPE International

Additional funding is available to students in order to help support their education in the energy industry and to help foster engagement between SPE chapters. Students are encouraged to apply for funding for various events that are in line with the SPE goals and purposes. Some examples for funding requests include (but are not limited to):

  • Attending or presenting at conferences
  • Educational trips (to visit plants or refineries)
  • Workshops or lunch and learns
